Patch: Linked

This one isn’t what you’d call a synth patch, because it doesn’t use any of the synth waveforms, just the plain input signal. So you should be able to build it, even if you only use standard guitar effects. It’s based on a video I saw once, but don’t remember where… However, the goal was to make a guitar sound synth’ish without actually using any synth hardware.

The original video proposed rolling down the tone pot on the guitar, but I thought I’d include it in the patch by putting a low pass filter on the input signal (in OSC1). The next step is to use a fuzz. In the SY-300, these are included among the overdrive effects. Fuzzes are typically really squeaky and scratchy, but because we dialed down the high frequencies in the input signal, the result is actually quite nice sounding. After that there is a delay effect, which is configured to be what one would call a slapback delay: The echo signal occurs only once and really close to the original signal. And that’s it. The delay is configured to be switchable with CTL2 (on by default), and CTL1 activates a uni-vibe effect that I used for some recordings a while back. Sounds funny, though.

The patch is named ‘linked’ because playing falling scales on the upper half of the fretboard somehow reminds me of the soundtrack of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening… the one on the original Game Boy.
